Sveitsin Meride-Serpianossa kisailtu EM-keskimatka tarjosi pyrintöläisittäin ja suomalaisittain jännittäviä ja upeita hetkiä. Florian Howald suunnnisti taitavasti keskittyen ja saavutti uskomattoman hienosti hopeamitalin maamiehensä Matthias Kyburtzin jälkeen. Moninkertainen MM-mitalisti Olav Lundanes oli kolmas. Simona Aebersold onnistui myös tekemään ehjän ja vauhdikkaan suunnistuksen ja ylsi suorituksellaan ansaitusti pronssimitalille. Huikea saavutus vasta 20-vuotiaalta juniorilta. Kilpailun voitti Suomen Marika Teini ja hopeamitalin suunnisti Ruotsin tähti Tove Alexandersson, jonka suunnistus hapuili aivan kilpailun loppupuolella.
Huge day at European Orienteering Championships 2018. Florian Howald 2nd and Simona Aebersold 3rd in Middle distance races today. Great runs also of Johan Runesson finishing on 8th place and Aleksi Niemi on 22nd place.
Florian’s comments: It was a real challenge today. Quite special terrain but still like I imagined. My plan to work a lot with the map (read a lot) went well from beginning to the end. It was physically demanding also but homecrowd cheered a lot in arenapassage and gave me power for the last loop where I could gain the silver medal. This medal just tastes great after working quite much to prepare for these home championships.
Simona’s comments: When I took the map at the start I saw that the start point was just a few meters next to our speculated start last evening and the first control was almost the same as our first control. It was really nice terrain and it was fun right from the beginning! I had one little hesitation at the second control where I was too much left and then bigger mistake at the 9th. But I told myself that the race is only over in the finish, so I kept on fighting until the end. On the last loop after passage I wanted to orienteer well again and make sure that I find every control the fastest way possible. A really nice feeling to sit on the leader’s chair afterwards! Great to perform on home ground!
Johan’s comments: For me the race was very good! I know that I didn’t find the best routes but I never lost a track of where I was and managed to stay focused the whole course! With my trouble in the season opening this was a really good place for me, so I am very satisfied.

Viime yönä heräsin kovaan kurkkukipuun ja nuhaan. Aamulla lääkärin kanssa päätettiin, että lähden kuitenkin juoksemaan. Ennen starttia oli aika voimaton olo ja ajatuksena oli tehdä vain puhdas suoritus. Kisa lähtikin hyvin käyntiin, kunnes 4-5 välillä kaaduin ja löin käden kovaa kiveen ja sitten tein heti virheen seuraavalle rastille. Fyysisesti en päässyt lähellekään sitä tasoa missä olen ollut koko kevään, mutta taidollisesti tein ihan hyvää duunia. Lähtökohtiin nähden suoritus jää kuitenkin plussan puolelle. Nyt vain toivon, että tauti lähtisi nopeasti pois ja voisin juosta viestissä.
